The Loughs Agency is a statutory body charged with the responsibility for the conservation, protection and development of inland fisheries, aquaculture and the promotion and development of angling and marine tourism in the Foyle and Carlingford Areas. The Loughs Agency is seeking to appoint the following post: (The post will run until December 2022, with possible extension, subject to funding. SENIOR SCIENTIFIC OFFICER – Analytics Lead. SeaMonitor Project. Salary Scale: SSO £38,017 to £41,799 p/a. Purpose of the Role. A unique and exciting opportunity in an inter-regional, multi-institutional setting; we are seeking a candidate to work on a multi-species marine telemetry project combining studies on anadromous and marine fishes, cetaceans and seals in the sea around Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland. As part of this ambitious project the Senior Scientific Officer - Analytics Lead within this team will help ensure the delivery of high quality spatial models and management plans for a range of mobile marine species (i.e., salmonids, elasmobranchs and seals) derived from the acoustic arrays. The role will also require the post holder to possess exceptional scientific report writing skills and experience in geospatial predictive modelling to ensure agreed Project targets and outputs are met. The post holder will also be required to provide specialist advice on issues to the Project Board and other partners as appropriate. Essential Criteria. Applicants must demonstrate that they possess the following criteria, by the closing date for applications: Knowledge/Qualifications, Skills and Experience. 1. A degree AND minimum two years’ research experience. 2. A proven track record in initiating, conducting and managing innovative scientific or technology projects and to statistically analyse and interpret the results. 3. Evidence of a theoretical and practical knowledge (including demonstrable experience) processing GIS data, geospatial predictive modelling and report writing. 4. Experience of publishing in peer reviewed literature. 5. Experience managing resources in a research environment (including working and reporting to Project Boards and funders in formal project management structures. 6. Excellent communication skills (oral and written), including experience of delivering public presentations to academic and stakeholder audiences and ability to communicate complex data/concepts clearly and concisely. Desirable Criteria. In addition applicants should be aware that after an eligibility sift, should it be necessary to shortlist candidates to go forward to interview, the following desirable criteria will be used. 1. A MSc qualification in an environmental area. 2. Evidence of first authored papers published in peer reviewed journals. 3. Familiarity with data acquisition systems, configuration of remote devices and sensor technology. 4. Demonstrable experience of scripting and data processing with languages like Python, SQL and R for processing serial data, etc. 5. Experience with open source and operating systems (Linux), message queue technologies (e.g., Kafka) and relational database systems. 6. Specific knowledge and experience of the use of acoustic telemetry for animal tracking.
